About This Treatment

What Is SkinPen Microneedling?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive skin treatment that uses a device with tiny, precise needles to create controlled micro-injuries on the surface of your skin. These micro needling punctures trigger your body's natural healing response, stimulating collagen and elastin production from the inside out.

At Boujee Nurse, we use the FDA-cleared SkinPen device. SkinPen is clinically shown to improve the appearance of acne scars, wrinkles, and uneven skin texture with minimal downtime and maximum comfort.

What Does SkinPen MicroneedlingTreat?

Microneedling treatment is designed to address a wide range of skin concerns. Because the procedure works by stimulating collagen production and your body's own healing process, the benefits of microneedling go well beyond surface-level improvements. Common concerns that microneedling can treat include:

  • Acne scars and acne scarring
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Hyperpigmentation and dark spots
  • Enlarged pores
  • Sun damage and sunburn discoloration
  • Stretch marks
  • Dull or lackluster skin tone
  • Mild scarring from injury or surgery

Ideal Candidates

Am I a Good Candidate?

Microneedling works well for most skin types and tones, making it a versatile option for many people. You may be a good candidate if you:

  • Want to fade acne scars or other types of scarring
  • Are noticing fine lines, wrinkles, or loss of firmness
  • Have uneven texture or hyperpigmentation you would like to minimize
  • Are looking for a treatment with minimal downtime
  • Want to enhance your overall skin health and radiance

The treatment is safe for the face and neck, as well as other areas of the body. However, microneedling should not be performed if you have active cold sores, open wounds, sunburn, or have used antibiotics in the previous two weeks. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, please let your practitioner know. Patients with a history of herpes or cold sores should consider taking antiviral medication before the procedure.

Not sure if microneedling is the right fit? Schedule a consultation and our knowledgeable team will assess your skin and help you decide.

Your Experience

What to Expect

Your visit starts with a one-on-one assessment. Your provider will review your skin, discuss your concerns, and personalize a treatment plan just for you.

Before the procedure begins, a topical numbing cream is applied to the treatment area to ensure maximum comfort. Most patients describe the sensation as a mild tingling or light pressure, not painful.

Once the numbing cream has taken effect, your provider will gently glide the SkinPen device across your skin. The precise needles penetrate the surface to create tiny channels that trigger your body's natural production of collagen and elastin. This process is what makes microneedling so effective at rebuilding youthful skin from the inside.

A typical microneedling session takes about 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area. There is minimal downtime after the procedure. You may experience some redness and mild swelling, similar to a light sunburn. These effects typically fade within one to three days.

Results become noticeable over several weeks as new collagen forms beneath the surface. Most patients see continued improvement for up to six months. For optimal results, we recommend a series of three to six sessions spaced about four to six weeks apart. Your provider will help you maximize your results with a customized plan based on your skin's needs.

Care Instructions

Pre & Post Care

Before your appointment:

Arrive with clean skin. Avoid using makeup, lotions, oils, or other skincare products on the treatment area. Stop using Retin-A, retinols, and exfoliating products at least three to five days before your session. Refrain from chemical peels, laser treatments, and microblading for two to four weeks before the appointment. If you have a history of cold sores, talk to your provider about taking antiviral medication as a preventive step. The treatment will not be performed if you have active cold sores, sunburn, or have recently used antibiotics.

After your treatment:

During the first 24 hours, avoid exercise, strength training, and applying makeup. Use gentle cleansers and moisturizers as part of your post-treatment skincare practices. Keep your hands away from the treated area and use clean pillowcases to reduce the risk of infection. Avoid snuggling with pets on the day of treatment to prevent bacteria from entering the open microchannels. Do not wear hats or anything that presses against the skin. If PRP is combined with your microneedling, leave the PRP on your skin for the rest of the day without cleansing.

Common Questions

SkinPen MicroneedlingFAQ

Most people are good candidates for microneedling. The treatment works well on all skin types and tones. It is a great option if you want to improve acne scars, fine lines, texture, or hyperpigmentation. Your provider will assess your skin during a consultation to confirm that microneedling is the right procedure for you. Certain conditions, such as active acne breakouts, open wounds, or pregnancy, may mean you need to wait or explore other options.

The number of sessions depends on your skin concerns and your goals. Many patients see noticeable improvement after just one session, but a series of three to six treatments spaced four to six weeks apart is typically recommended for optimal results. During your consultation, your provider will build a customized treatment plan that fits your needs and your budget.

Recovery from microneedling is mild and relatively quick. Right after the session, your skin may look red and feel warm, similar to a light sunburn. This redness usually fades within one to three days. You may also experience slight swelling or a chance to bruise, but this is not common. Most patients return to their normal routines within 24 hours. Avoid wearing makeup for the first day and follow your post-treatment instruction for the best recovery.

Microneedling is most commonly performed on the face and neck, but it can also be used on other areas of the body. Common treatment areas include the chest, hands, arms, and abdomen. It is especially helpful for stretch marks and scarring in these areas. Your practitioner will let you know if microneedling is a good fit for the area you want to treat.

Microneedling is a safe procedure when performed by a trained provider. The most common side effects are temporary redness, mild swelling, and slight discomfort during the session. Some patients may experience minor bruising or skin sensitivity for a few days. Serious side effects are rare. To minimize risk, follow all pre and post care instruction provided by your provider and choose an experienced, knowledgeable med spa like Boujee Nurse.

Results from microneedling can last several months to over a year, depending on your skin and your skincare practices between sessions. Because the treatment stimulates your body's own collagen and elastin production, the improvements continue to build over time. Many patients maintain their radiant skin with periodic maintenance sessions once or twice a year. Pairing microneedling with a strong daily skincare routine helps maximize and extend your results.

Yes, but timing matters. It is generally recommended to wait at least four weeks after Sculptra injections before scheduling a microneedling session. This allows the Sculptra to settle and begin stimulating collagen on its own. Your provider will help you plan the best sequence of treatments so you get the most out of both procedures.

Both microneedling and certain laser treatments can help with melasma, but microneedling is often the preferred choice. Laser treatments use heat, which can sometimes trigger more pigmentation in melasma-prone skin. Microneedling works without heat, making it a gentler option for improving skin tone and helping topical products penetrate more effectively. Your provider can help you decide the best approach based on your skin type and the severity of your melasma.

RF (radiofrequency) microneedling combines traditional microneedling with radiofrequency energy to deliver heat deeper into the skin. This can enhance skin tightening and may be helpful for more advanced concerns like deep wrinkles or significant skin laxity. At Boujee Nurse, we offer SkinPen microneedling, which delivers excellent results for acne scars, fine lines, texture, and overall skin rejuvenation without radiofrequency. If you are curious about which option is right for you, schedule a consultation and we will walk you through every option.
