Dissolving Filler

About This Treatment

What Is Dissolving Filler?

Dissolving filler is a cosmetic procedure that uses an injectable called Hylenex (hyaluronidase) to break down and remove hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers. Hyaluronidase is an enzyme that specifically targets hyaluronic acid, the ingredient commonly used in most popular filler products.

The injection breaks down hyaluronic acid fillers quickly, often producing visible improvement within 24 to 48 hours. It is a safe, effective treatment for patients who want to correct or remove previous filler injections.

What Does Dissolving FillerTreat?

Dissolving filler can address concerns related to previous dermal filler treatments. Common reasons patients seek filler dissolving include:

  • Overfilled lips or facial areas
  • Filler migration from the original injection site
  • Lumps, bumps, or asymmetry from previous injections
  • Unwanted filler that no longer suits your desired look
  • A desire to start fresh before new filler treatment

Ideal Candidates

Am I a Good Candidate?

You may qualify for dissolving filler if you have hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler you want to correct or remove. This procedure is ideal for patients who:

  • Are unhappy with the appearance of previous filler
  • Have experienced filler migration or uneven results
  • Want to reduce volume in a specific treatment area
  • Would like to dissolve old filler before new injections

Hylenex specifically targets hyaluronic acid fillers. Products like Sculptra cannot be dissolved with this method. During your consultation, your nurse injector will review your medical history, discuss your concerns, and determine if dissolving filler is right for you.

This treatment is not recommended for patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding, have an allergy to hyaluronidase, or have an active skin infection near the treatment area.

Your Experience

What to Expect

Your visit starts with a consultation. Your nurse injector will examine the treatment area, review your previous filler history, and build a customized treatment plan based on your goals.

A topical numbing cream may be applied before the injection to reduce discomfort. The Hylenex solution is then carefully injected into the areas where filler needs to be dissolved. Most sessions take about 15 to 30 minutes.

The procedure is quick with minimal downtime. You may notice immediate changes as the enzyme begins to break down the filler. Some swelling or bruising may occur but typically resolves within a few days. Full results are usually visible within one to two weeks.

More than one treatment may be necessary depending on the amount of filler present. Your injector will schedule a follow-up to assess your results. If you wish to have new filler placed, it is best to wait at least two weeks to allow the area to heal.

Care Instructions

Pre & Post Care

Before your appointment:
Take Arnica Montana tablets for three days before your visit to help reduce the risk of bruising. Limit alcohol and avoid blood-thinning medications such as fish oil, aspirin, and ibuprofen. If you take a prescribed medication, consult your prescribing provider before making changes.

After your treatment:
Bruising and swelling are potential side effects and may occur. Wait at least two weeks before assessing your results to determine if more Hylenex is needed or if you are ready for new filler.

Common Questions

Dissolving FillerFAQ

Most patients describe the sensation as a mild pinch at the injection site. A topical numbing cream can be applied before the procedure to improve comfort. Any tenderness typically fades within a day or two.

Hylenex is designed to dissolve hyaluronic acid fillers, the most commonly used type of dermal filler. Products like Restylane, Revanesse, Juvederm, and Evolysse can all be dissolved. Fillers not made from hyaluronic acid, such as Sculptra or Radiesse, cannot be dissolved with this method.

Hylenex is a brand name for hyaluronidase, an injectable enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid. Your nurse injector administers it through a small needle directly into the area where unwanted filler is located. The enzyme works quickly, and patients often see changes within 24 hours.

Common side effects include swelling, bruising, and tenderness at the injection site. These effects are temporary and typically resolve within a few days. Allergic reactions are rare but possible. Your injector will review your medical history to help prevent complications. If you notice increasing redness or pain, contact us at (303) 900-8751.

Many patients notice an immediate reduction after the injection. The enzyme continues to work over the following 24 to 48 hours, and full results are typically visible within one to two weeks. Additional sessions may be needed to achieve smooth contours and the desired outcome.

There is minimal downtime. Most patients return to normal activities the same day. Avoid strenuous exercise for the first 24 hours. Swelling or bruising may occur but usually resolves quickly.
